Christmas Appeal 2007
Help us give desperate people the Christmas gifts they want most This Christmas, our meals runs will be out on the streets offering soup and sandwiches. We'll be delivering Christmas boxes to families and other people in need. We'll be cooking Christmas dinner with all the trimmings for elderly people and homeless people. We'll be sharing the joy of Christmas morning with children and parents in family centres. We'll be celebrating the birth of Jesus through music and song on the streets and in churches. We'll be caring for people who have drug addictions, mental health problems and disabilities. We'll be praying for goodness and mercy in the world. We'll be wishing you a very Happy Christmas. We cannot do all that we do without the dedication and hard work of our officers, staff and volunteers. But they couldn't do a thing without the generosity of new and long-standing supporters like you. | Somewhere to stay this Christmas If you'd met Steve two years ago, you might have written him off as a tearaway. Yet when we got to know Steve, we began to understand just why he had become so angry and difficult. £18 will provide two nights over Christmas in a Salvation Army shelter and a hot breakfast - which could be the first step towards bringing them in off the streets for good. | | A warming cup of soup We met Martha at a meal run every night for months, getting to know her a little better each time. She told us how she had lost her home after her husband died, and how she felt she had lost the will to live herself. Although the street was cold and lonely, she felt it was all she needed; life without her husband was so wretched anyway. But one night, she asked the Salvation Army officer is there was somewhere she could go to mend her broken heart. She left the streets that night and is now in a resettlement centre, looking forward to moving into a home of her own again. Click here to give.
| | UNCOMPLICATED When he lost his job eighteen months ago, David started drinking heavily. Before long he had lost his home and was sleeping on the cold London streets. But when David came to a Salvation Army homeless centre for help, we didn't judge or question him. We simply accepted him and tried to help him. £45 will buy five sleeping bags for homeless rough sleepers. Click here to give.
| | UNDETERRED When our founder William Booth was told by his son about the hundreds of homeless people sleeping rough on the banks of the Thames, his answer was: 'Go and do something!' And from that day to this, The Salvation Army has been responding to that simple command. £76 will pay for a meal run with hot food for 20 homeless rough sleepers. Click here to give.
| | UNAFRAID Many young women are drawn into prostitution because of poverty or drug addiction, then ruthlessly exploited by pimps and drug pushers. Kate is one of our success stories. She was driven to prostitution to pay for her heroin addiction. She was working the streets late at night when she met Barbara, a Salvation Army officer. Barbara acted fast to get Kate away from the local pimps and pushers. Click here to give.
