Electralyte EP Launch ... : Visit the Electralyte web site
This spring, ALOVE partner band ‘Electralyte’ launched their first EP. It features the track ‘Freedom’ – which relates to the issue of human trafficking. Electralyte performed it live for the first time at this year’s ‘Human Traffick’ event at Sheffield, in February. Here ALOVE hears from the band about the EP and the inspiration behind the music …
What has been the inspiration behind the song Freedom?

We already wanted to sing about the Freedom that can be found in God – a freedom that comes from abundant grace and unconditional love. We believe this is something worth telling the world about! Then we started talking to ALOVE about the issue of Human Trafficking and it seemed a natural step to adapt the song in its early stages to sing about their need to be free.

So, who is singing in this song?

If you like, you could imagine the singer standing on a street corner trying to get the attention of the passing hoards, hoping they’ll hear the singer’s plight and plea for help.

How long did it take you to record?

We started the EP in November and finished mixing / mastering in January. We did all the production / mixing in the Sonic Surgery – the studio of Dr.Levski (aka Paul!). Paul has been working as a record producer for 3 years so it seemed a very natural process, and one that gave us creative flexibility and total control of the sound.

How did you get inspired for the other songs?

Of the other songs, “Hope” is the other true 100% Electralyte creation. We had spent the Autumn months writing a number of songs, and Hope captured some of what we were feeling during that time. We were continually hearing stories of a fearful and a hopeless society. And without belittling the issues of the world today – we believe there is an eternal hope to be found in God!

“I Love You” is a song written by lead singer Matt Leeder, before Electralyte was formed – but subsequently taken on as one of our own. It’s quite a personal song and reflects something of our relationship with a God who is both a faithful Father and the King of Kings.

“Sing Beyond the Silence” is a song written by Matt and a good friend of the band, James Vigurs. (We’ll be working with James at Spring Harvest this year). It is a song intended more for congregational use than the others, and sings of the church’s call to proclaim God’s truth in a barren land.

How do you work together as a band to write and create songs/music?

Often Matt will come will pre-formed ideas, riffs or tunes and we play through it, change it, groove it, mangle it, alter the key and time signature and spit something out at the end that sounds pretty fresh and exciting. Other times, Matt will have spent a good while writing a song that is fairly complete when it’s brought to the rehearsal and all that’s left to do is some creative arranging and fleshing out.

Why is it important that ALOVE is aware of the issue of Human Trafficking?

There are many important causes to get involved in – and there’s a lot of suffering and injustice in this world – but the issue of Human Trafficking is both current and on our doorstep.

What did you enjoy about playing Freedom live at Sheffield?

We have played it so many times in rehearsal, and we’d played the CD to a few friends and the guys at ALOVE, but it is very different to actually play in front of a crowd – especially a youthful crowd! There is always the nervousness of “will or won’t they like it!!” There was a real buzz in the place that day and to perform and sing about such a real issue, along with the imagery on the video, was very special. It felt quite powerful and significant.

What are your writing plans for the future?

Well, we’ve been working hard since the turn of the New Year to develop some more material and negotiate our recording contract. Hopefully during the summer we’ll be in the studio recording our first album to be officially released later in the year.
