Is
it really so bad to openly discuss the meaning
of life these days? Or is it just offering
the answer that is taboo? ALOVE tackles the
big issue of Evanglism.
‘The time is
10:42, and the housemates are in the dinning
room.’
Earlier, Big Brother set the housemates the
task of finding the meaning of life. Should
they pass this task, they will be richly rewarded.
The responses were varied and covered most
points of view. ‘We
are here to pass on our genes and ‘To
love people’. One housemate reckoned:
‘There must
be a higher power to give everything meaning’.
Not too bad housemates!
So why did the programmers feel that they
could air a question like that? Because people
have always asked that question and everyone
has a view on the subject? Or perhaps because
the medium is non-authoritarian and open to
discussion.
It’s not that faith is off the radar,
but rather that being told what you should
believe that’s off limits.
So should we take Big Brother’s lead
and simply ask the questions and talk about
the answers? What does it mean to share Jesus
within our culture and from where you are
on your journey of faith? Surely conversation
and discussion are really important?
Understanding how our pluralist culture looks
at issues will be important in such a dialogue.
It enables us to understand other perspectives,
but also to share the challenge of the Jesus
story and the liberating message it brings.
Our lifestyle, credibility and accountability
are also essential. It means our words are
not empty and that faith is shared as a lived
experience, day by day.
As we read about Jesus, we see that he not
only exemplified the life of a spirit-filled
human, he challenged whenever he could the
worldview of his listeners. There was a clear
choice, to carry on the way they always had,
or be transformed by him and follow him.
To engage with our culture, relationships
are essential. Finished your exams? Invite
some people round to celebrate. Not doing
anything on Wednesday – sit in a Pizza
Hut (all day buffet) and spend some time with
people. Feeling creative? Why not write a
letter of encouragement to someone, or make
them a gift? As those around you get to know
you, they will see and experience what Jesus
is doing in your life. Because it is your
life as it is being changed that you are sharing:
That is the message. |
