10 Amazing Things You Can do for Someone You Know
What do you think of Michelle’s experience of mentoring? - share here
1 Money Talks
You don’t have to scream and shout about doing something amazing for someone. Being Kingdom people, we know that true thanks and appreciation will come only when we meet the King of Kings himself. So, today, live to please him and why not pay off a debt for someone you know is struggling. Pass your money on to a trusted friend or Church Leader who’ll ensure it ends up in the right hands.
2 Secret Giving
In Matthew 6 v 4 Jesus instructs us to give our gifts in private. In the previous Chapter, Jesus also tells us to love our enemies. It’s easy to love those who love us, but what about those who make our life difficult? Send them a gift, but do it secretly. Only God and yourself will ever know the sender’s identity. Do it today…you never know, maybe their attitude to you may change.
3 Give Me A Break!
Do you know someone who has a lot of responsibility in their life at present? Perhaps they look like they need to take an evening off and simply chill. Maybe a young couple in your church with a new baby need an evening out together to feel ‘human’ again. Could you baby-sit for them? Maybe the church music team are tired of getting up early to set-up the PA gear on a Sunday. Could you get access to the building on Saturday night and set it all up ready for them?
4 Father Christmas
Granted, we’re not all rich, but perhaps you and a group of your friends could club together to buy someone a plane/train/ferry ticket in order to visit an overseas relative this Christmas. Maybe someone at college or church is studying over in England and can’t afford to go back this Christmas to see their family.
5 Master Chef
Why not use the opportunity of your birthday, Christmas or Easter to invite a load of people (who wouldn’t normally be invited to socialise with your friendship group) to your house for dinner. Make sure this isn’t done in a patronising manner. Just be yourself, and kindly lavish good food and good conversation on them.
6 Pray as you go
Is there someone in your church who desperately needs prayer at the moment? Perhaps they’re going through a crisis and can’t see any way out. Tell them that no matter what happens, you and your friends are committed to praying for them everyday for a whole year. They may not seem bothered by this, but so what. The most amazing thing you can do for anyone is to constantly bring their needs before God in prayer.
7 The Sheep & The Goats
In Matthew 25 v 31-46 Jesus speaks of the rewards for those who obeyed his rules for showing love to people on earth. Equally, we are made aware of the severe punishment that lies ahead for those who don’t follow Jesus’ teaching. Many churches have a prison visiting service, where visits are carefully planned and monitored. Why not investigate how you and your friends could get involved in visiting people in prison? Or why not go on a hospital visit with your vicar or pastor. Taking time out to do this really does change someone’s day and gets them thinking as to why someone would bother visiting them: because of God’s love!
8 Say It With Flowers
When did you last send your Mum or your girlfriend flowers? When did you last send anyone flowers? You don’t have to be female to receive flowers, but if it feels strange buying someone you know flowers, then why not buy your Granddad a pot-plant or your vicar a tree to plant in his garden. Make sure there’s a note attached saying why you’re thanking them.
9 The power of words
We live in a culture today that revolves around texts, emails, blogs and MSN. It’s great to have all these ways of instantly communicating, but somewhere down the line, we’ve lost the art of writing a letter. Buy some nice stationery and take time to craft a really special letter, thanking that person for what they’ve done in your life.
10 Get Washing!
Next time you wash your car, wash the person’s next to it. You might want to ask them first, but either way it’s a great example of showing kindness practically. If you’re feeling really generous, go for the full valet treatment and hoover it inside!
