Calling all students! Mission at Uni
How are you involved in your university or college? - share here
Daryn McCombe is from Sutton Salvation Army and is also a student at King’s College, London. Last month he won the Presidency for his Student Year and is gearing up for his Sabbatical year. ALOVE asked him all about ...
1. Which Uni are you at and what are you studying?

I'm at Kings College London, in my second year studying Theology.
2. What made you choose your subject?

To be honest it was the only one I was vaguely interested in, it has a broad range from ancient History to modern literature. Also it catered for my natural instinct to take my faith further and learn more about who God is.
3. Can you tell us why you decided to run for Uni President?

So far, I have been involved in stuff the Union does. I am the treasurer for the Musical Theatre society, A Rep on the Student Representative Council (as well as many boring sub committees!), and I work behind the bars. My involvement so far has shown me that a Students Union can be a very effective way of making someone's time at university not only more enjpoyable, but more rewarding. For example, the Volunteering schemes we run mean we send students out into the community to get involved in community projects, but also to start and lead projects themselves. All of this needs careful leadership. As the union has just undergone a major restructuring to make sure it is more student focused instead of structure focused it seemed the right time to run.
4. What sort of things did you do in your campaign? Any whacky ideas to communicate with the voters!?

Hmmm well the obvious - posters, huge banners hung in the hall ways, leaflets, emails, web site, standing up in front of huge lecture theatres, and trying to convince people to vote for me. I even got a word in just before some guys had a maths exam! Mainly, it was just about getting out and talking to real people, listening to what they had to say and incorporating it into the ideas I had already had, and being a genuine honest guy.
5. What would you like to achieve during your year as Uni President?

Lots of things, and of course my manifesto (see www.darynmccombe.co.uk) If you could sum it all up it would be increasing participation, at the moment about 10% of 20'000 students at Kings are actively involved in union activities, from Clubs, Societies, Volunteering opportunities, and Campaigns. I am sure that many more people are involved in things out side of Uni and the Union, however it would be great to get those who are doing nothing doing something, so that they can grow, but also so the wider College community and consequently general society can benefit.

One particular thing I’ll be focusing on, is profiling The Salvation Army’s Human Trafficking Campaign. Students are famous the world over for taking a stand on moral and political issues which are clearly wrong, whether it be racism, censorship, state terrorism, sexism, the list is endless. Before I ran for the post, I spoke with Graeme Hodge in The Salvation Army’s International Development Office about how we as a union could do our bit to help fight Human Trafficking. He gave me loads of ideas so that is something that will be kicking off big time at kings.
6. What have you learnt about yourself during the process so far?

I need more than 4 hours sleep a night! That I really enjoy talking to people, and meeting them where they are, and journeying through their life story.

7. What have you learnt about God?

Lots! I find everything I do to be a learning process about God, and our relationship to him.
8. What things are you praying for, in relation to your sabbatical year?

Patience, perseverance, wisdom, good ideas, and good ways to communicate with students.
9. How do you hope your role as uni pres will help you to serve others during the year?

Essentially that is what the role is. In fact, that's what any true leadership role is, one of service to the people you are leading. My whole role will be to ensure that the union is working in the best way possible for students. Whether that be the other Sabbatical officers or the 15 members of permanent staff as President I'm there to make sure that they all are serving the students.
10. What's inspiring you about the potential of the year ahead?

The chance to work in an organisation that has already grasped the need to change, and has moved ahead with the essential changes. Next year will be about making that happen! The biggest challenge and inspiration are the 20,000 students I have the privilege of working for next year.
