Student Survival Kit
It’s that time of year again. Young people the country over are preparing to embark on their biggest journey yet as they leave the comforts of home for college, university, halls and fresherdom. Editor of student magazine The Blurb, Jonathan Carswell talks about some of his experiences of being a Christian student on campus.

Can you tell us a little about your work with students?

For the last two years, I have been involved in the production of a Christian magazine designed especially for students, called The Blurb. As Student Editor, I was involved in everything from interviewing celebrities to flogging it to students; arranging competition prizes or arranging sales at all the major festivals. It’s been great fun and the magazine has been a super help to loads of people. It’s not you're average Christian magazine (a massive understatement!). Over the last year alone we’ve covered everything from how to cook up a BBQ on a tenner to choosing a new hoodie! We do have some deeper stuff there too with interviews, bible reading notes, tackling tough issues…the list goes on.

I have also been involved with my CU in Durham helping them with their mission work on campus as well as sitting on the Student Council of Universities and Colleges Christian Fellowship (UCCF) – helping make decisions and progress the Christian witness to students.

University can be a very daunting proposition. What can students do to both prepare before they get there and settle in once they arrive?

Make the most of it! Check out your Uni’s website and see if they have a CU there. If so check out it’s website and find out something of what they do. Also, think about societies and clubs you might want to be involved in. Fancy skydiving? Join the sky diving society! Fancy some acting? Get into acting! Do lots of new and different things that you can’t do elsewhere but make sure in all the things you do, do it for God’s glory.

Is it really worth going to a CU and why?

Anyone who has been a Christian for longer than an hour or two knows its hard going. Meeting with other Christians can be a great source of learning, encouragement and peer support. CU will challenge and equip you in service and you’ll be able to get involved in all sorts of stuff that will stretch you and bless you.

Jonathan Carswell has just finished at Durham University. He has been heavily involved in student life, both Christian and secular, for ages. He is now Youth Pastor at a church in Northern Ireland.
