Exams
are a busy time of year, so what better than
to get advice from someone who has just gone
through the experience? Here, Michelle Spencer
tells ALOVE how she coped …
This time of year always seems a bizarre one;
loads of people walking round in an overheated
daze, some being right in the middle of exams,
with emotions running high. On the one hand
there is the sheer excitement that in the
very near future you will be free to sit in
the park all day eating ice cream and sun
yourselves, watch the whole 10 series’
of F.RI.E.N.D.S back to back and stay up till
whenever, because you know you will have next
6 weeks to sleep. Unfortunately utopia is
still 2 weeks away and the reality is you
will have to endure an eternity sitting in
your school gym breathing in the musty, sweaty
air, and wondering what the outcome of this
exam is going to be.
I am a student studying sociology and cultural
studies at Goldsmiths University in London
and although I finished my exams over a month
ago, I can clearly recall the sort of pressures
I felt not only during exams, but throughout
my whole year of study. Even though exams
are the current emphasis, the whole year’s
work is taken into account. You need to have
perspective in these times, so whenever it
feels like you aren’t reaching your
goal look back over the year and be encouraged
that everything you have learned and achieved
will be reflected in your final grade.
Something I have discovered over the past
study year is that in order to achieve your
goal there should be an element of self awareness;
you need to discover how you work best in
order to gain the most from your time revising.
Are you someone who is better focused in the
morning, afternoon or evening? Can you work
at home or do you need to be in another environment?
Do you study better with someone else or on
your own? Recognising the surroundings you
work best in means you will potentially gain
more from your time spent in study; your work
patterns will fit with your personality, this
will hopefully decrease the stress levels
as you won’t be working in vain and
you will be gaining something valuable from
your time. Knowing who you are and how you
work will not just be beneficial for studying
but it is an integral part of your career
decisions, your relationships and life as
a Christian, so take some time to find out
who you are, what you are about and how you
operate best in the world.
Lastly, whilst being self-aware is integral
to all aspects of life, balance is the key.
Be careful not to be self-centred because
by doing this you will be ignorant of other
people and how you are treating them. It is
understandable that you may stress out at
the people who you love but remember to keep
them in your thoughts, thank God for them
at every available moment and always to remember
to apologise for what you may have said or
thought about them in your moments of weakness.
For everyone who is taking exams at the moment
I pray that you would reach your goal and
that these exams would be a springboard into
the next chapter of you life …
... Enjoy the adventure! |
