ALOVE gives a few tips for Biblical Stress Management …

Exam time is often associated with stress and for obvious reasons! The exam date is almost upon you, there is too much to cram in, how will you remember it all and what if that question you really need doesn’t come up?

Yet not all stress is negative. In fact, there is actually such a thing as positive stress or ‘eustress,’ which plays an important part in leading a healthy life. It can motivate us to action, gives us energy and drive. Motivation, creativity and energy are all ‘positive stress’ words, which are essential to how we approach exam time.

But no matter where you are on the scale, whether you are experiencing ‘eustress’ or ‘distress’, it’s important that you manage your stress properly! There are all sorts of ways you can do this, including exercise, good time management, having a healthy diet, getting plenty of sleep, having a laugh and building in good recreation time with friends.

There are also things we can learn from the Bible to help us in this area. Here are a few passages from the Bible to help us keep things in perspective…

• When our strength is pushed to the limits, remember that we rest in God’s strength. ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness…’ See 2 Corinthians 12: 9-10.

• When all we can see is the next exam, remember that our lives are in the hand of a faithful God: ‘Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. See Lamentations 3:21-23.

• When we feel isolated or like we’re drowning in study notes, remember we have the love and support of the church community, the body of Christ: ‘There should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it.’ See I Corinthians 12 25-26.

• Remember to seek after God above all else: O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. See Psalm 63: 1.
