Intro

Water is vital to our lives.

80% of our bodies are made up of water and two thirds of our planet is covered by water.

We turn on the tap, water comes out.

We bathe in water, and play in it.

We swim in it, and sail on it.

We landscape our gardens with it.

We flush it away, drain it away and let it run off our nicely cleaned cars.

We choose between bottled, flavoured, still, sparkling, tonic and many more types and brands of water than we can imagine.

This is not the case for everyone.

The Salvation Army has water projects in over 18 regions around the world. In most cases, water is one of the first steps in our holistic response to a communities needs. Because we are part of those communities already, we see how water opens the ‘floodgates’ to a better life and more opportunity for every generation.

Water supplies are managed by the local residents and The Salvation Army, ensuring that equipment like pumps and water tanks stay well maintained and that the water keeps flowing! Often, gardens are developed near the water supply to make sure that any run-off water is used to water vegetables or serve animals which can be used to provide an income.

Many communities impose a water tax on themselves which they use to fund the upkeep of the well and expand the water supply into schools and even homes.
