Welcome to The Salvation Army, West Scotland Division

install 3 Majors Russell & Catherin Wyles at their installation by Commissioners John & Betty Matear at Rutherglen, Thursday 25th August 2011.

Please find below a message from our New Divisional Leaders, Majors Russell & Catherine Wyle

Recently our house was broken into and a number of items stolen - sadly that's the age we live in. Within the items was my wife's handbag with all of her documentation including bank cards and driving licence. The whole of her identity was in the hands of someone else. The hassle of cancelling cards and ordering new ones was equal to the concern of someone attempting to pass themselves off as Catherine Wyles - especially as amongst items stolen was a Salvation Army uniform!

Our identity is, however, more than a few plastic coated cards, even if they do carry the image of us. Our identity is about our character, our personality and our values - not simply a bunch of cells and DNA knitted together: we are much more than that. To one person we may be a father, to another a brother, to a third we are a work colleague or a sports partner. We are defined most of all however not by what we do but who we are.

As people know us there affection for us alters - sometime deeper - sometimes not!

It soScripture reassures us that God knows each one of us intimately as individuals:

lsquo; You have searched me, LORD, and you know me... For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb.' (Psalm 139:1 & 13 NIV))

And knowing all about us God still loves us: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.' (John 3:16 NIV)

As we get to know others we need to see in them the wonder of the creator and who they truly are - for they are not just an ‘identity' but a creation of God.

Salvation Army announce new building scheme for

Glasgow City Centre Corps

Today (Tuesday 25th October), The Salvation Army will announce a new building scheme for Glasgow City Centre Corps at Houldsworth Street, Anderston.

Over the last few weeks, the 1970's building has been demolished and now plans are in place for a magnificent new build which will open to the public in 2013.

The area of Anderston is significant in the history of The Salvation Army in Scotland, in the late 1800's, when the Salvation Army was expanding from England into Scotland, Anderston Corps was the first corps established in Scotland.

The Salvation Army Trustee Company purchased the current site at Houldsworth Street from the Corporation of the City of Glasgow in 1970 (for £ 5,750) and Glasgow City Centre Corps opened in 1972.

Significant research has taken place in the Anderston area by The Salvation Army, and two young Salvation Army officers Captains Matt (35) & Sarah Butler (35) have been appointed to oversee the new build and develop the mission and work to reflect the needs of the whole community in Anderston.

Captain Matt Butler said,
"We are really excited to be given this chance to develop the work of The Salvation Army in Glasgow. We are keen to create a community church that will be seen as a beacon of light in the area and a hub for a whole host of activities for all ages."

During the build process, the neighbouring church, Anderston & Kelvingrove Church of Scotland has kindly let out some office and hall space for Captains Matt & Sarah to continue the programme of children's clubs.

Captain Sarah Butler continued,

"Since moving to Glasgow from our last appointment in Wales, we have been welcomed by so many people. We also help out with school assemblies at Anderston Primary School which has helped us get to know local children, the parents and their needs. We have been talking to them and asking what they would like to see in our building. The area is dominated by a large number of flats; sometimes living in flats can have limitations for the children and their play. At our Wednesday after school club around 40 children regularly come along already, which is a safe space for them to run around and use up the boundless energy children have, we see this developing and growing in the new building."

Discussing this significant investment, Major Russell Wyles, The Salvation Army's West Scotland Divisional Commander explained,

"As a church and charity we simply could not do our work without the generosity of the public, our new build will cost in the region of £ 1 million, which has been funded by legacy donations. It is an investment we are keen to make as we believe in the people of this great city; we have a long history of serving the needs of the people in Anderston for the last century. This new expression with a focus on children and families will ensure we are here to serve local people well into the next century."

The Salvation Army aim to offer a full range of activities not on offer by other groups in the area, such as building on the children's work, introducing creative arts projects; dance & fitness and sports activities. The new building will also be home to fresh expressions of worship, including ‘Messy Church' and host a café where people can pop in for a coffee and light snacks and meet together as a community.
