In Darkest England and The Way Out

Classic work of social programming by William Booth (1890)

William Booth's visionary work has long been regarded as a classic in the field of social welfare, since its publication in the tumultuous years of the late Victorian age. It has been newly recreated here as a facsimile of the first edition, from the original text, and is freely downloadable chapter by chapter as PDF files.

['In Darkest England' is also available here as straight ASCII text, thanks to Project Gutenberg, though there are some errors in this version.]

Also downloadable as images:

  • Frontispiece illustrating the 'Darkest England' scheme graphically
  • Fundraising flyer included in original edition
  • Reverse of flyer with testimonials from bishops of the time
