7 June 2010: The History Man

THE HISTORY MAN

The History Man is Retired Bandmaster Ollie Allen. Each month he will take you on his time travels into past events in the story of Reading West Salvation Army. here is the one for August 2010.

How often do we hear our friends and neighbours wistfully recalling decades that have long gone - the 50's to 70's - of family life then - or perhaps the advent of TV with it's great plays, films, soaps, musicals etc.

It is good to look back, but not in a negative way! What about our Corps in those same days? They were perhaps the good days, or dare we say it the best days! Yes they were good days with quite a few Salvationists coming into the Corps from various parts of the country, swelling our numbers and benefiting  the music sections.

Our Band peaking at 34 and songstera around 30 in number. The Sunday school flourished. We has a Younf peoples band, singing company, guards and sunbeams. Such was the growth that the Band built the extra hall witha two story extention next door such was this period of growth. The project took just seven month to complete!

The Corps boasted Drama Groups that presented productions of plays such as "The Nail", "Peter" and "Scrooge".

Reading West ran the first Silver Threads (Over 60) cluk in the then British Territory and was used as the blueprint for clubs nationwide. I hope you enjoy these snapshots of our history.

Join me a gain on my time travels.
