13 October 2005: Salvation Army member back in the North East with MBE

Geoff Platt receives his MBE from HM The QueenA Salvation Army member who has spent half-a-century helping children in the North East has been awarded an MBE.

68 year old Geoff Platt from Brandling Park, Gosforth was appointed MBE as part of the Queen’s Birthday Honours on 11 June this year. He met Her Majesty and received his honour at Buckingham Palace today (Thursday 13 October).

Geoff’s parents were members of The Salvation Army when he was born, so he attended the organisation from a very early age. He first came to Newcastle in 1955 as a youth officer and organised successful youth programmes and events over the next 30 years. It was in Newcastle - and through The Salvation Army - that he met his wife Ruth (66).

Geoff also took on the role as the organisation’s regional fundraising officer, which saw him raise over £1 million. Before retiring in 2004 Geoff had organised The Salvation Army’s Northern Christmas Appeal for many years. The appeal helps thousands of disadvantaged children and elderly people during the festive period and is one of the largest fundraising events of its kind in the region.

Geoff PlattGeoff is still involved in the work of the organisation and provides advice and resources on a range of community projects. He has most recently been out and about on the streets of Newcastle, collecting money for The Salvation Army’s Annual Appeal.

Geoff commented: “It was such a shock to receive the MBE in June, however it was also a great honour as I always consider the work I have undertaken to be a privilege. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a youth officer and am proud of what I achieved in that role. I also loved organising the Christmas Appeal and the difference it makes to people in the region is overwhelming.

“I travelled to Buckingham Palace with my wife Ruth, son Nigel (39) and granddaughter Esme (8). The day was absolutely amazing. We have had so much support from friends, family and colleagues it has been fantastic and I am very grateful.”

Divisional Leader for the Salvation Army in the North, Major Melvin Fincham added: “The work that Geoff has undertaken for The Salvation Army has been fantastic. His hard work and dedication has helped thousands of people in the region and it is great that he is being honoured with an MBE.”
