Research

The Heritage Centre combines the archives of The Salvation Army's International Headquarters and the United Kingdom Territory.

We hold material relating to corps, social service and other centres in the United Kingdom, Salvation Army personalities, and the work of the Army in over 100 countries.

Researchers are admitted to the archives by appointment: Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday, 9.30am-3.30pm at the discretion of the Archivist, subject to the fees, charges and other conditions outlined below. Telephone 020 7326 7800 for an appointment.

Visiting researchers
Day rate (up to six hours): £12

There is no charge for Salvation Army cadets or full-time undergraduate students who provide a letter from their college or university. Advice is freely offered to researchers undertaking academic research, to assist with locating relevant sources.

Salvation Army officers or employees engaged in official work and approved corps history researchers will be invoiced via their departments, corps or centre.

We are willing to carry out a limited amount of research (up to a maximum of 3 hours) on behalf of family and local history researchers who are unable to visit the Heritage Centre themselves. After a free initial assessment, further research can be undertaken at your request at a cost of £20 an hour (this includes 5 free photocopies).

GUIDELINES FOR RESEARCHERS

  • Please use PENCILS only when working with books or archival material
  • In the interests of the security and preservation of our collections ALL photocopying of material is undertaken by our staff, please ask for assistance. We charge 20p a page for copies (25p a page if sent by post)

We reserve the right to refuse to copy any items where the copying process will cause damage.

  • No more than 40% of a book may be copied, up to a maximum of 50 pages (even with non-copyright material)
